New Junior Badminton Clubs

Change 4 LifeTwo new weekly Change 4 Life junior badminton coaching sessions begin in Leamington in May.
Those wanting to emulate Olympic medallists Gail Emms and Nathan Robertsons – or those who just want to play this popular sport – will now be able to attend the new clubs setting up at Trinity School and North Leamington School. These two schools have been selected to run junior clubs under the Department of Health’s “Change 4 Life” scheme. The scheme was set up to promote healthier lifestyles by
offering more sporting opportunities both for the schools themselves and the pupils of other schools in their local communities. Sports coordinators at the two schools turned to popular Stratford based junior club Alveston Juniors to help set the sessions up. Alveston are the largest junior club in Warwickshire with a number of county players amongst their membership and with their experienced CRB checked, qualified coaches, the club was seen as an ideal partner in the project.

Starting on 9th May, Monday sessions at North Leamington School in Sandy Lane will run 4.30 – 6.00pm and will cover technical and tactical aspects aimed at players aged 10 -17 using a structured coaching plan developed by former England number one, Jill Pittard.

Younger players and beginners aged 7 to 11  are encouraged to attend the Wacky Racquets “badminfun” sessions at Trinity School, Guy’s Cliffe Avenue on a Wednesday, also 4.30 – 6.00pm. These start on 11th May.

Wacky Racquets is a new concept developed by the club using lower height nets, shorter length racquets and a variety of unorthodox equipment such as hoops, cones – and chocolate! These develop the basic skills required prior to moving up to the main Monday sessions and gives local primary school children the chance to play a sport that isn’t normally on their curriculum.

Interested players are invited to come along for a free trial session and both clubs have racquets to borrow if players don’t have their own. All players need to bring are suitable kit and footwear, a drink – and lots of enthusiasm.
