Last week saw 14 students from Campion School take part in a Gifted and Talented support day organised by the Central Warwickshire Sports Partnership. The day was held at the Alan Higgs Centre in Coventry and was open to all schools that are part of the Partnership Plus Programme. For the central area this includes Campion School and Round Oak School.
The day was designed to support those students who are competing at the highest level in their chosen sports and also those who are excelling in PE lessons in school.
The day started with an inspirational talk from local Athlete Sara McGreavy. Sara spoke of her achievements and her hopes for the future. She delivered a great presentation and then answered numerous questions from the group.
During the day the students had the opportunity to take part in a new sport for most of them of, Handball. The aim of this was to challenge them to learn new skills. They also had a practical SAQ session. SAQ stands for Speed, Agility and Quickness. This session was designed to look at the students movement skills and used a method that even the top Athletes in the county use. A nutrition session helped the students think about how they fuel their bodies for sport and for everyday life.
They also had a Pilates session, which for many was a really challenging session focusing on body control.
Later in the year the students will be invited back for a follow up session to offer them further support. Students from year 7 and 8 in Partnership Plus Schools will also have access to these great opportunities.
