As part of the London 2012 Get Set Network, Campion School have committed to using the power of the Olympics to inspire young people to be involved in sport. To help kick start their Get Set campaign the school hosted their annual winter sports day. This is in addition to the traditional summer sports day that Campion hold each year.
The Winter Sports Day involved every child in the school and had a real Olympic theme. The sports on offer were all Olympic Sports and included Handball, Football, Netball and
Indoor Rowing. For some students it was the first time they had tried Rowing and Handball and both these sports went down really well.
Throughout the day the Olympic Values were clear to see. Students involved in the Handball demonstrated determination as they focused on developing new skills in a sport they have never tried before. The students were inspired by some of the gifted and talented students at Campion School who had the opportunity to share their skills with other students. Friendship was evident throughout the day. Although there was a strong sense of competition and a desire to win the students worked well together in their teams and in their houses. Respect was a key element of the day with all the umpires and young officials being 6th formers at Campion School. These students were excellent role models and made a huge impact on the smooth running of the event.
The house system is very strong at Campion School and plays a huge part in school life. Students are very proud of the house they are allocated to and work hard throughout the year in various competitions and events to win points for their house. These events are not just sport but reach throughout the curriculum.
The final results for the Winter Sports Day were as follows:
Year 7 Winners – Phoenix
Year 8 Winners – Unicorn and Griffin
Year 9 Winners – Griffin
Year 10 Winners – Phoenix
Year 11 Winners – Griffin
The overall winners were GRIFFIN.
Head of PE at Campion School, Simon Keell said,
‘This was a great event and the enthusiasm from all the students involved was fantastic. The young leaders made the whole event possible and the Olympic spirit could be felt throughout the school.’
