Secondary Indoor Rowing Course
Stratford Boat Club will be hosting an ‘Indoor Rowing 4 Young People’ course (NGB recognised course for delivering within secondary schools).
Date: Wednesday 22nd February
Time: 09:30 – 2:00.
There is a £20 cost for resources per candidate, which will be invoiced after the course. There are 20 spaces for secondary staff and will be available on a first come basis.
Course information
The course is for teachers, adults supporting learners and young people who are involved in delivering high quality indoor rowing sessions in schools and community clubs (both within the curriculum and as an extra curricular activity). The course is great for gaining knowledge on the best and safest way of using an indoor rowing machine.
Course Outline
The course is six hours in length and can be delivered in two 3 hour modules. The specific content can be slightly tailored to the audience but major components will include instruction on:
- Developing safe and appropriate warm up and cool down activities
- Developing a long and effective rowing stroke that follows the model of British Rowing technique
- Developing feedback skills in both coaches and personal thinking skills in participants.
- Exploring ways in which indoor rowing can be integrated into the school curriculum (where appropriate)
Why Do it?
Indoor Rowing is now apart of the secondary schools competition framework. The Youth Sport trust requires all schools to appoint trained staff up to the minimum standard set by IR4YP.

Schools’ Tennis Road Show

We are delighted to inform you that bookings are OPEN for the annual Schools Tennis Road Show, taking place over the spring term 2012. From Glasgow to Bournemouth, the Road Show will visit 16 venues across the UK and aims to provide School Games Organisers, Schools Sport Partnership staff, CSP representatives and other colleagues with an overview of all the resource and support available to schools, together with practical ideas for delivering tennis in an education environment.
In addition teachers who deliver tennis / PE are welcome to attend if they wish, although some of the sessions and content will be sector specific (primary and secondary).
EACH ROAD SHOW WILL FOLLOW THIS PROGRAMME:

| 10:00am – 10:45am | A Guide to Schools Tennis 2012: An interactive presentation providing an overview of all the support available to schools and an introduction to new resources being launched. |

| 12:15pm – 1:00pm | Informal Networking & Planning: An informal opportunity to meet with your local Tennis Development Manager. |

Valuing Your Sports Volunteer
This workshop will help your make the most of your club’s key asset - your people. It will give you help and advice on recruiting more volunteers and to motivate, reward, retain and manage them more effectively.
The workshop will be held on Thursday 2 February from 6.30pm – 9.30pm at Leamington Town Hall.
British Basketball Schools Challenge
What is the project?
There are a number of ways in which your school can be involved in the challenge; in the classroom, around the school or involving other schools. The suggested areas your basketball based projects could cover are:
• A cross-curriculum project
• An intra-mural competition
• Assemblies based around the sport
• An inter-school competition
• Exciting and interactive wall displays
Who can enter?
• Any primary, middle, secondary or special school in England
Prizes:
The best projects submitted will qualify for a once in a lifetime school visit from one of the GB men’s or women’s basketball team players. This is a unique chance to have an Olympic athlete visit your classroom and meet the children to share their experiences of what playing at the top is all about.

Matalan TOP Sport: getting more young people taking part in PE and sport In partnership with the Youth Sport Trust, Matalan TOP Sport (part of Matalan Sporting Promise) supports PE and sport in primary schools.
The new look Matalan TOP Sport resources have been designed to help teachers unlock the potential of all children in PE at Key Stage 2; developing of their thinking, physical and social skills, while enhancing their health and well-being. Primary Leadership: developing leadership skills in Physical Education
We have created a fresh approach to leadership in PE that will enable young people to develop their own leadership role in other aspects of school life. It encourages young people in Key Stage 2 to step forward, develop their skills and realise their leadership potential.
By the end of the workshop you will be able to:
- identify with the key features and characteristics of the Matalan TOP Sport programme and resources adapt activities to include and develop all young people.
- apply and utilise the resources to engage young people in their learning and improve their physical competency demonstrate the use of higher order questions to support children’s learning.
- demonstrate how to develop young peoples’ cognitive, creative, social and personal skills through physical activities.
- apply and integrate the Active Leader resource to develop leadership skills in PE lessons. describe Matalan’s Sporting Promise and related programmes.
