The Central Warwickshire Sports Partnership organised the annual Secondary School Tennis Slam Competition. The competition is open to year 7 and 8 boys and girls and is designed to get more young people to experience the game.

The winners of this competition go on to represent Central Warwickshire in the county finals held at the AEGON Classic Women’s International Tennis Tournament held at the Priory Club, Edgbaston. Not only do the students get to experience playing at this great venue but they will also receive free ground passed to watch their Tennis heroes in action.

Although an annual event this year had a special feel to it being the Olympic year. Students from Aylesford, Myton, North Leamington, Southam and Kenilworth School all attended. Warwickshire LTA supported the event providing a coach to help run the competition. Tony Pillinger, from Leamington Tennis Club ensured that the tournament ran smoothly and also helped to organise the club hosting the event. With 8 courts being made available the students were able to play more matches than if the event had been hosted by a school.

Both the boys and girls competitions were closely fought. In the girl’s competition Kenilworth had to play a sudden death match against one of the Myton teams to decide who would go through to the finals as the scores were equal. In the end it was a Myton final with their year 7 teams taking on their year 8 team. With almost nothing between the two teams it was the year 7’s that came out on top and will now go on to represent Central Warwickshire in the County finals at the AEGON Classic.

Jenny Bayley, PE teacher from Myton School said, ‘The students really enjoyed the opportunity to take part in this competition and the girls are very exciting about playing in the finals and experience such a high profile competition.’

Next week will see the primary school tennis competitions for year 3 to year 6 students. Who knows we may even discover a future Wimbledon star of the future!

This year’s winners and runners-up – Myton School

On Wednesday 9th May the Central Warwickshire Sports Partnership organised an amazing trip for local primary and secondary school children to visit the Olympic Stadium in London.

The trip involved a number of Partnership Plus schools; these are school that have invested financially into the Sports Partnership to ensure they get extra opportunities for their students. Children from Whitnash, All Saint’s Junior, St Patrick’s, St Margaret’s, Campion and Round Oak School took part in the trip. The children ranged from year 2 right up to 6th formers.

The day involved setting off early from Leamington, but the 6am meet time seem well worth it once the coach reached the Olympic Park. As the children headed to the stadium they passed the Velodrome, Hockey Stadium, Basketball Arena and Aquatic Centre. The morning was spent in the Olympic Stadium watching some outstanding Athletes who were taking part in the Sainsbury’s UK School Games. The School Games consists of 4 levels, this event being the highest level, level 4 competition. Level 1 competitions involve intra school competitions for example, house events and sports day, Level 2 competitions involve events between local schools with the winners of these competitions going through to the Level 3 finals to be held at Warwick University in July.

After being inspired in the stadium the children could then take part in range of interactive experiences in the Olympic Park. The students took part in a select of different sports, saw healthy eating cooking demonstrations, learnt the Mascot dance that will be sweeping the National and generally had a great day.

Ali Knight, the local School Games Organiser said, ‘It was a pleasure taking the students to the Olympic Park. They behaved extremely well and really appreciated the level of competition they were watching. Just being in the Olympic Stadium itself is inspirational and we really hope this was a day the children will never forget.’

The tournament was organised by Ali Knight, the School Games Organiser and hosted at Campion School in Leamington. A team of young leaders from Myton School, Southam College and Aylesford School helped run the competition and demonstrated some outstanding umpiring skills.

The schools involved included St Peter’s Primary School, All Saints Primary School, Leek Wooton, Brookhurst Primary School and St Peter’s Primary School. The competition was closely fought with two schools finishing on the same points and the school in third place just one point behind. In the end St Peter’s were beaten to the post on goal difference by All Saints Primary School, Leek Wooton.

All Saint’s will now go on to represent Central Warwickshire in the Level 3 School Games finals at Warwick University in July.
