The day started with an inspirational talk from local Athlete Sara McGreavy. Sara spoke of her achievements and her hopes for the future. She delivered a great presentation and then answered numerous questions from the group. The students then had the opportunity to have their photo taken with not only Sara but also with one of the original 1948 Olympic Torches.
The day was designed to support the students to develop further within PE and Sport and to ensure they were on the right path to achieving their potential.
To help the students think about being efficient and effective in terms of their movement they took part in an SAQ session. This stands for Speed, Agility and Quickness and involves lots of dynamic movements.
A nutritional expert was on hand to advise the students on how to fuel their bodies correctly to get the best out of themselves.
Through Pilate’s the students looked at their core stability and developed an understanding of the importance of having good body control and core strength.
Following the Olympic theme the students also took part in the Olympic sport of Handball to help them develop new skills and also raise their awareness of this Olympic sport.
Ali Knight, Partnership Development Manager said:
‘This was a great opportunity provided for Partnership Plus secondary schools. These are schools who have invested financially into the Partnership to help ensure additional opportunities for their students. It was great to see Campion School students at this event and to see the huge potential these young people have.’

Children had the chance to take part in their very own Olympic Torch relay and carry one of the original 1948 Olympic torches.

Last week saw over 500 year 3 and 4 children from Leamington, Kenilworth and Rugby taking part in a fantastic celebration of sport. Children from St Patrick’s Primary School and from Clinton Primary School were part of this fantastic event.
The day involved the children taking part in range of different sports with each sport linking to one of the Olympic Values. Through Athletics the children looked at the value of determination and had the chance to do a real Olympic Torch Relay, having the honour of carry an actual 1948 Olympic Torch.
Through Football the children looked at the value of friendship and how important it is to work as part of a team.
For some of the children they tried a sport they had never tried before, Handball. Through this sport they were asked to show the value of respect for their team mates and the officials.
A real buzz was created through the Zumba sessions where courage was being demonstrated through the children performing in front of each other.
For many of the children they had their first taste of a Paralympic Sport. Students from Round Oak School in Warwick led Boccia matches and this was to demonstrate the value of equality.
Leaders from Campion School helped keep the day running smoothly helped the children to understand the Olympic values. In preparation for the event all the leaders who attended the day had spent an afternoon completing ‘Flames Lighting the Way’ Olympic Values training to help them develop a clear understanding of the Olympic values and their importance.
Ali Knight, Partnership Development Manager and Local School Games Organiser said:
‘The day provided a great opportunity for the children to feel like they were taking part in their very own Olympics and helped them think about the importance of London 2012 and the Olympic values. Next week will see 100’s of year 5 and 6 students taking part in a similar event.’

News from last year’s CAP 2011/2012 Programme:

CAP Athlete Launch Event

Coventry and Warwickshire’s talented young athletes have been given valuable backing as they aspire to achieve their sporting ambitions. A group of 25 young sports stars from across Coventry and Warwickshire have been awarded a total of £13,000 to help them achieve their sporting ambitions. The bursaries were awarded during a special event at Coventry University’s Westwood Heath Sports Pavilion in Coventry.
CAP, now in its fourth year, is a bursary scheme co-ordinated by CSW Sport which provides support to talented athletes from across the sub-region. The bursaries are funded by Warwickshire County Council and Coventry City Council and are supported by the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership for the 2012 Games and Coventry University. The funding is used by athletes to assist their development by covering some of the costs associated with their sports including coaching, equipment, travel and competition entry fees.
The athletes were presented with their awards by Leamington’s 100m hurdler and London 2012 hopeful Sara McGreavy, Carolyn Robbins and Mark Gore from Warwickshire County Council and Councillor John Mutton, leader of Coventry City Council. Among those recognised during the presentations were Coventry triathlete Sian Rainsley, Stratford rower Camilla Hadland, Warwick fencer Ellie Cormack, Rugby golfer Lauren Taylor and Nuneaton judo expert Kyle Sweet. Another winner was rhythmic gymnast Rachel Smith, 18, who attends Caludon Castle School and has aspirations of competing at London 2012.

Students from Campion School and Round Oak School came together last week to develop their leadership skills whilst taking part in their ‘Flames Lighting the Way’ Leadership training.
The Flames: Lighting the way is a programme developed by the British Heart Foundation in partnership with Loughborough College and delivered in association with the British Heart Foundation National Centre (BHFNC) at Loughborough University.

Flames is an Olympic and Paralympic value driven programme, delivered by young leaders and centred around physical activity and health.
The students involved in the Flame training will be invited to help at Primary School Olympic Values Events. The first one being later this month and involving over 400 year 3 and 4 children.

The leadership training involved the students developing an understanding of the Olympic and Paralympic values. Through Athletics the students develop the value of determination. Their challenge was to sprint over a set period of time and then keep trying to beat the distance they had set themselves. They developed the value of excellence through a fun speed bounce activity. Courage and friendship were developed through trust games and a game of adapted sitting volleyball helped the group to discuss the value of equality.

By the end of the training the students were clear on all of the Olympic and Paralympic values and were keen to have the opportunity to share these with the children that will be attending the primary events.

With less than 200 days till the start of the Olympics excitement is building within schools in Central Warwickshire. The Campion and Round Oak Flame leaders will be great role models to other young people and will help use the power of 2012 to inspire more involvement in sport.

Sainsbury’s is to be headline sponsor of the School Games, a great new opportunity for more young people to enjoy the benefits of competitive sport.

The Youth Sport Trust, which was given responsibility for securing commercial partners by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and commissioned by Sport England to deliver the programme, can reveal that Sainsbury’s has pledged a £10 million package to support the new School Games competition over the next four years.

From 6-9th May 2012, hundreds of young athletes will have the opportunity to compete in 2012 Olympic venues, just two months before the world’s elite athletes, at a national multi-sport event, part of the School Games competition. Around 1,600 of the nation’s finest able-bodied and disabled young sports stars will compete in 12 Olympic and Paralympic sports, across five Olympic venues including, the Olympic Stadium, Aquatic Centre, Velodrome, Basketball Arena and Excel Centre.

Sainsbury’s was previously headline sponsor of the UK School Games and this new sponsorship will see the supermarket build on its involvement in school sport. Through its Active Kids programme, London 2012 Paralympic Games sponsorship and this new initiative, Sainsbury’s aims to make sport accessible to children of all ages and abilities.

Justin King, Sainsbury’s Chief Executive said: “We are thrilled to announce our support for the School Games over the next four years. It will complement our Paralympic Games sponsorship perfectly and will add extra weight to our hugely successful Active Kids Scheme which is now in its 8th year. We have promoted a healthier and more active lifestyle for all for many years now and this new sponsorship will see us continue to build on that in 2012 and beyond.”

The Sainsbury’s School Games is open to all schools, and includes three levels of competition (class versus class, school versus school and then county or city wide sports festivals) leading up to the showcase final at the Olympic Park. The Sainsbury’s School Games will continue after 2012 and the ambition is for the finals to be held in the Olympic Park at regular intervals. Schools have until the end of February to sign up.

The Department of Health has also committed an additional £14 million to fund School Games Organisers for another two years, up to 2015. That comes on top of £22 million of funding from The Department of Health and Sport England to support those posts until 2013. The School Games Organisers are responsible for working with schools to deliver the School Games in schools and between schools and will also work with projects like the Change4Life Sports Clubs.

Youth Sport Trust Chief Executive, Baroness Sue Campbell said: “Sainsbury’s has a proud history of supporting school sport and we are delighted to have them on board for the School Games. 2012 promises to be a magnificent year for sport and the Youth Sport Trust is delighted to be delivering the School Games, which represent a fantastic opportunity to excite and inspire young people through sport.”

Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, Jeremy Hunt said: “We are absolutely determined to leave a real and lasting legacy for young people from London’s Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the Sainsbury’s School Games will help do just that. The fantastic funding package announced today – from Sainsbury’s, adidas and the Department of Health – shows the commitment to completely transform competitive sport in schools. I want to thank Sainsbury’s and adidas for their generosity in helping to secure the future of the School Games beyond 2012.
