School Games

What is the School Games?

The School Games is a key Government priority for realising a meaningful sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is supported by three Government Departments – Department for Education, Department of Culture, Media and Sport, and the Department of Health – with funding from Sport England, through the National Lottery. The School Games underlines the Government’s commitment to providing a new approach to competitive school sport is designed to motivate and enthuse all young people.

The school games is a celebration of competitive sport for pupils that will provide opportunities for all young people and is split into four distinct but integrated levels:

Each secondary school has a teacher release post which will be key to the delivery of LEVEL 1. The overall role is to provide specialist PE and sport training to local primary schools and within their own school. The task list for the teacher release post is:

  • to help schools to create sustainable school sport competitions, both within and between schools, involving all pupils.
  • to help schools involve their staff, parents, local people and young leaders and volunteers to lead competitive sport.
  • to help schools engage pupils who are less active or who do not have equal access or opportunities to compete (e.g. pupils with disabilities).

The School Games Organiser will be there to support these teacher release posts to achieve the above outcomes and will make resources and tool kits available to help them.

The School Games Organiser will be planning and delivering an inclusive competitive LEVEL 2 programme that will feed into the LEVEL 3 competition. A real focus will be those young people who are currently not experiencing competitive opportunity.

A local organising committee will be set up to lead on LEVEL 3 competition linked to the School Games. This event will be a County Multi Sport Competition involving a large number of young people both as competitors and young leaders.

LEVEL 4 will be a National Multi Sport Event that will be fed through NGB performance systems. Logistically it would not be possible for the Level 3 events to feed into this. This event will be for the country’s top class young sports men and women. They will have the opportunity to perform in some of the Olympic venues in May next year.
